Accounting for specific impacts of fisheries in the Environmental Footprint Method

The current Environmental Footprint (EF) method does not account for impact pathways related to the exploitation of marine products. However, recent methods have been developed to assess the impacts of fisheries, drawing from two scientific domains that have so far remained largely disconnected: Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) and Fisheries Science.

Our objective is to identify and recommend the most suitable models to incorporate two key impact pathways into the EF method: (1) the effect of extracting fish from wild populations on the resource itself, and (2) the impact of fishing activities on the seabed. We are collaborating with three other experts to identify relevant methods, evaluate them, and formulate recommendations on the most appropriate approaches for future integration into the EF method.
