Seafood and biodiversity: development of the BIOMARIS method

The BIOMARIS project feedback webinar took place on April 13. This project, supported by AQUIMER, was carried out by Sayari, in conjunction with industry players Euronor, FROMNord and SOVINTEX. It is financed by France Filière Pêche. Its aim is to develop a robust scientific methodology for assessing the impact of fishing activities on marine biodiversity, and to apply it to a concrete case study, that of Food4Good’s North Sea saithe.
Project results:
- First stage: bibliographical study based on the latest scientific advances available on the environmental footprint of marine products and the latest ecological knowledge. Proposal to supplement existing indicators with a “resource sustainability” indicator and a “seabed impact” indicator (fishing gear).
- Second stage: application to a case study of deep-sea saithe fishing in the North Sea, based on data supplied by project partners Euronor and Sovintex. This case study provided a concrete validation of the methodology developed.
- Third stage: scientific publication (in progress)
This method is currently being applied to other case studies. Don’t hesitate to contact us
