🌊 How can we better integrate the environmental impacts of fishing into European environmental labelling?
And above all, what’s the link with marine biodiversity? 🐟🌱
That’s the central question of the new report from the European Commission, to which our expert, Anne-Claire Asselin, had the pleasure of contributing as an expert, alongside Ian Vázquez Rowe Clara Ulrich, Elliot Brown, with the scientific and technical support of Laura García Herrero, Fulvio Ardente, Nicola Ferrara, and Cecilia Casonato.
This two years project was a fascinating exercise in interdisciplinary dialogue between two fields that rarely interact: Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and fisheries science. Two complementary approaches that don’t always speak the same language… but that’s precisely what makes this work so valuable: learning to understand one another, to challenge perspectives, and to better assess the real impacts of fishing.
📌 The report puts forward concrete proposals to :
– account for the exploitation (and overexploitation) of fish stocks,
– and consider the impact of certain fishing gears, like bottom trawls or dredges, on the seabed.
